  • Investigative interviewing involves eliciting a detailed and accurate account of an event or situation from a person to assist decision-making. Our Centre provides unique interviewer training that can be adapted to any jurisdiction, and across an ever-widening array of professions including policing, child protection, medicine and family law.

    Our researchers and trainers provide the intellectual rigour and practical assistance to support agencies who wish to transform their systems, attitudes and behaviour so they can more effectively meet the needs of victims, patients, law enforcers and justice systems.

    The Centre offers specialist resources, training and research facilities that develop interviewer competency, enable quality evaluation, and work to improve justice systems. Our industry-based research has a focus on outcomes.

    This has led to the creation of the Four-Feature Model of Training:

    1. An understanding of the psychology of human learning.
    2. The creation of a genuine partnership between academia and industry.
    3. An emphasis on individually tailored protocols.
    4. Implementation of continual business improvement processes.

    An interactive, private-access web portal acts as a forum for trainees, and enables the co-ordination of research activity across multiple organisations and disciplines.

    We offer the tools that are most likely to lead to fairer outcomes, more accurate convictions, improved diagnoses, and more sensitive treatment of victims and patients.

Our Story

Our Founding Director, Professor Martine Powell, first became involved in the design and evaluation of investigative interviewer training programs in 1996.

Over the next decade she developed expertise and a reputation in the field - becoming the “go to” person for advice on vulnerable witness training.

Then, in 2008, a watershed moment led her to rethink accepted training approaches. This set her on a journey that would lead to radically improved training practices that are now attracting interest from around the world.
